How to Trim Baby Nails Safely
The best way to trim baby nails is to work slowly, in good light, when your baby is settled. A soft emery
At 17 weeks pregnant, you may be settling into the middle part of pregnancy or still finding it physically demanding. Changes in discharge, clothing fit and energy can become more noticeable. Your next useful step may be as simple as confirming your scan booking or asking about a symptom you have been putting up with.
Your baby’s kidneys are working and passing urine into the amniotic fluid. External sex organs have formed, although an ultrasound does not always show the baby’s sex clearly. Organs will continue developing beyond this stage.
You may notice more vaginal discharge. Ask your doctor or midwife about discharge that changes colour or develops an unusual smell. Clear fluid leaking from the vagina needs immediate advice, rather than assuming it is ordinary discharge or urine. Bleeding also needs prompt assessment.
A comfortable bra and clothes with room to move may make daily life easier. For questions about weight gain, ask your care team what is appropriate for your circumstances. There is no single weekly target that fits every pregnant person.
Many people first recognise movements between 16 and 24 weeks. You may notice gentle flutters at 17 weeks, but first movements are not tied to a single week.
If a change or reduction worries you, contact your midwife, doctor or maternity unit immediately. Do not use a home Doppler to decide that everything is all right; hearing a heartbeat at home cannot assess your baby’s wellbeing.
An anatomy ultrasound is usually offered between 18 and 22 weeks. It looks at the baby’s body and organs, as well as the placenta and other features of the pregnancy. This is a health assessment, not just an opportunity for a picture.
Ask who will explain the report and what happens if the scan raises a question. You can say whether you want to know the baby’s sex, while understanding that the sonographer might not be able to tell. If you are anxious about the appointment, let the team know. Our prenatal tests guide explains the difference between screening and diagnosis.
If you would like antenatal classes, ask what is available and when bookings open. Classes may cover labour, birth, feeding and early care, and can be a place to ask questions in person. Check the format, cost and whether a support person can attend before choosing.
You do not need to plan the whole birth now. It may be enough to decide who you would want involved in appointments and where you can get support between visits. For the basics, see planning your prenatal care.
In Australia, call 000 for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, collapse or a life-threatening emergency. Do not drive yourself if faint or very unwell.
Contact your GP, midwife or hospital immediately for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, fever, vomiting that prevents drinking, persistent or worsening pain, severe headache or vision changes. Seek urgent care if you cannot reach them. Do not wait for your next routine appointment.
