How to Trim Baby Nails Safely
The best way to trim baby nails is to work slowly, in good light, when your baby is settled. A soft emery
At 9 weeks pregnant, you may be tired, queasy and getting through the day in smaller pieces than usual. You might also have very few symptoms. This week is a good time to check that your pregnancy care is organised and to ask about the tests you may be offered over the next few weeks.
Pregnancy weeks are usually counted from the first day of your last period, not conception. With a typical 28-day cycle, 9 weeks pregnant is roughly 7 weeks after conception. Cycle variation can change this estimate.
The face is becoming more recognisable, with the mouth and tongue taking shape. The arms and legs are bent, and developing muscles allow small movements. The inner ears are still forming. These are gradual changes, not a checklist to assess from your own symptoms or a single scan picture.
Nausea can happen at any time of day. Tiredness, breast tenderness and needing to wee more often may continue. You may also notice headaches or changes in your skin. None of these symptoms has to appear on a particular day, and comparing your experience with someone else’s rarely tells you much.
A change in symptoms cannot confirm either that the pregnancy is progressing well or that something is wrong. If symptoms suddenly change and you are worried, contact your GP or midwife. Bleeding or pain needs prompt advice rather than an explanation based on symptoms alone.
Try small meals and regular sips of fluid if nausea makes eating difficult. Ask someone to help with cooking if food smells are a trigger. If sickness is interfering with eating, drinking or daily life, seek treatment; you do not need to wait until you are dehydrated.
Burning or stinging when you wee needs medical advice, even if you have assumed frequent toilet trips are just part of pregnancy. Mention headaches that are new or troublesome, and seek urgent help for a severe or persistent headache or changes in vision.
If your first appointment is not booked, arrange it now. Ask who will follow up any blood and urine results and how to contact the service after hours. A dating scan may be offered depending on your circumstances; your clinician can explain its purpose and any follow-up needed.
Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is available from 10 weeks. It is optional screening for certain chromosome conditions, not a diagnosis. Ask about costs, limitations and what you would be offered after an increased-chance result. Our prenatal tests guide explains the different types of tests.
In Australia, call 000 for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, collapse or feeling very unwell. Go to an emergency department immediately for shoulder-tip pain, one-sided or worsening lower abdominal pain, or dizziness. An ectopic pregnancy can cause internal bleeding without heavy vaginal bleeding. Do not wait for your next appointment. Do not drive yourself if faint or unwell.
Contact your GP or midwife straight away for other bleeding or cramps. Seek urgent medical help if vomiting means you cannot keep fluids down, or you have fever. If your usual clinician is unavailable, seek urgent care rather than waiting.
